Operational leasing, financial renting or financial leasing: what is the difference and which suits your business?
You are looking for a company car for your business, but you are not sure which formula suits you best. Operational leasing, financial renting or financial leasing: these terms are often used interchangeably, but they work in fundamentally different ways. And that choice has a direct impact on your monthly budget, your balance sheet and your tax situation.
In this blog, we explain each concept clearly, without jargon, so you can make the right decision for your situation.
What is operational leasing?
With operational leasing in Belgium, you lease a company car for a fixed period, typically 36 to 60 months, for a fixed monthly payment. That payment covers not only the financing, but also a full package of services:
- Maintenance and repairs
- Tyre changes and tyre storage
- Insurance (third-party and comprehensive)
- Road tax and vehicle registration
- Roadside assistance across Europe
- Replacement vehicle in case of prolonged breakdown
At the end of the contract, you simply return the vehicle. The residual value risk lies entirely with the leasing company. The vehicle also does not appear on your balance sheet: the leasing cost is an ordinary operating expense, comparable to rent.
Operational leasing is ideal for businesses and self-employed professionals who want maximum peace of mind, with complete budget certainty from the start to the end of the contract.
What is financial renting?
Financial renting allows you to finance a company car without a heavy upfront investment. You pay a fixed monthly rental for the use of the vehicle. This keeps your working capital available for your core activities and leaves your credit lines free.
The great advantage is flexibility. You choose the formula that suits your business:
- Financial renting with services: everything in one monthly payment, including maintenance, tyres and insurance
- Financial renting without services: financing only, you manage maintenance and insurance yourself
- Balance formula: maximum freedom towards the end of your contract
The residual value is agreed upfront at a minimum of 16% of the purchase value. At the end of the contract, you have the option to take over the vehicle at the agreed residual value. That purchase is possible, but never obligatory. Prefer to swap the vehicle for a new one or simply return it? That is also possible. You decide when it is relevant for you.
Note: with financial renting, the residual value risk lies with the client. If the vehicle turns out to be worth less than the agreed residual value, that is for your account.
The rental payments are in principle tax-deductible as a business expense, in accordance with the applicable tax rules for your type of vehicle.
What is financial leasing and why is it different?
Financial leasing is a banking product with a different legal and tax structure from financial renting. It is offered by banks and licensed credit institutions. The tax and accounting treatment differs, making financial renting a more accessible and flexible alternative for many SMEs and self-employed professionals.
Operational leasing vs. financial renting: the difference at a glance
| Operational leasing | Financial renting WITH services | Financial renting WITHOUT services | Financial leasing |

| Monthly cost | Higher, but all-in | Mid-range, services included | Lower, excl. services | Lowest, pure financing |

What are the tax implications in Belgium?
In Belgium, tax considerations play a crucial role in your choice. A few key points:
CO2 emissions determine deductibility
For all three formulas, the deductibility of costs is linked to the vehicle's CO2 emissions. From 2026, only fully electric vehicles will be 100% tax-deductible. Combustion engine vehicles will progressively become less deductible.
Benefit in kind (BIK)
If an employee also uses the vehicle privately, a benefit in kind is calculated based on the catalogue value, CO2 emissions and the age of the vehicle. This calculation applies to all leasing formulas.
Balance sheet and financing ratio
With operational leasing, the vehicle does not appear on your balance sheet, which does not affect your financing ratio. With financial renting and financial leasing, the vehicle appears on the balance sheet as an asset, which is relevant if you want to apply for bank credit.
Which formula is right for you?
There is no universal answer. The right choice depends on your situation, priorities and business profile.
Choose operational leasing if...
- You want a fixed, predictable monthly cost with no surprises
- You do not want to spend time on maintenance, tyres or insurance
- You do not want the vehicle on your balance sheet
- You prefer to simply return the vehicle and get a new one at the end of the contract
Choose financial renting WITH services if...
- You want to keep the option to purchase the vehicle at the end of the contract
- You still want to be relieved of maintenance, tyres and insurance
- You accept the residual value risk but do not want any operational hassle
Choose financial renting WITHOUT services if...
- You want the purchase option at the end of the contract
- You prefer to manage maintenance and insurance yourself, or have already arranged them
- You want the lowest possible monthly cost and accept the residual value risk
In short
Operational leasing: complete peace of mind, fixed cost and no residual value risk.
Financial renting with services: purchase option with ease of mind, residual value risk with the client.
Financial renting without services: purchase option with lower monthly cost, manage services yourself.
Financial leasing: a banking product with a different legal and tax structure.
